Brendan at DigitalPhocus wrote about 3 big players, 2 from AOL and one from Fox, who have moved on to greener pastures. The most interesting to me is Jason Calacanis' departure from AOL.
I was not too familiar with Jason until I heard him on recent episodes of the Gillmor Gang Podcast and have quickly turned into a big fan. Recently, he started releasing Beta versions of his own podcast and whats interesting is that most of Episode 3 (with Brian Alvey) is about their experience at AOL and how they have given him freedom to do his own thing and treated him very well. He even compared their experience positively to that of companies who have been acquired by Yahoo. He considered himself lucky in that regard.
If you are interested in this at all, you MUST download Mid Tail Gang IV, and fast forward to minute 15 and hear Jason explain what its like for a true entrepreneur to work for a large corporation.
He tells a story about a samurai who becomes a senator. The samurai spent all of his days protecting the village by cutting bad guys heads off. The only rule you have is your Sword.
This Samurai does such a good job protecting the village that people ask him to join the senate. The samurai does so and they give him a wig, a book and powder his face and then throw him into the senate. One senator gets up, speaks his mind and the samurai instantly cuts his head off. He tells the senators that this was the F'ing stupidest thing he has ever heard. All of the senators are outraged, saying that you can't go around cutting people heads off.
He says, "But I'm a Samurai?"
"No, you're a Senator now."
"Well...I don't want to be a Senator, I want to be a Samurai!!"
I think it is great that Jason is a Samurai once again! Good luck buddy.
